About Us

Social Studies education is foundational to the understanding of the democratic principles of our nation.  The subject allows students to ask essential questions providing opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, create solutions to problems, recognize patterns, hypothesize outcomes, and draw conclusions that apply to historical and current events.  Through the participation in the statewide West Virginia Social Studies Fair program, our students are permitted to showcase their emerging skills in these most significant areas.

Both Ms. Acord and Mr. Kellison in the 2018-2019 school year hosted a school-wide Social Studies Fair.  Most projects exceeded expectations! The school’s first-place winners found themselves awarded in the next stages of the competitions hosted by the state of WV, resulting in two making it to the state level and placing 2nd and honorable mention against the state’s best.

Since restarting the school’s competition it has been hoped that the school would continue to surpass the previous year’s accomplishments.  The school-level fair was a huge success with highly competitive projects that proved to be state contenders as they placed in the county and regional ones.  However, COVID 19 changed how the Social Studies Fair would be conducted. The teachers and students alike modified how the projects would be presented to protect all while maintaining the highest academic standards that the school is known for while continuing the benefits of participating in the healthy competition and exploration of the Social Sciences..

Despite the struggles that a pandemic has brought to the world, our students and educators have relied on creativity and modern technology to reimagine a Social Studies project beyond the poster-board. Utilizing various digital platforms and obtaining credible sources, the presentation of projects can be both unified but individualized for each student. With these thoughts at the forefront, our school would like to present to you the 2021 Saint Joseph Central Catholic High School Virtual Social Studies Fair.

Ms. Acord

After completing my MA program in history, I stayed around the area and started a family. I was a stay-at-home mom until both my girls started school, and I was drawn back into academia and returned to teaching. For the last 12 years I have taught as an adjunct professor of history for Marshall University going into various area high schools teaching college level classes to high schoolers. However, 6 years ago I was asked not only to maintain my previous role of teaching college classes here at St Joe's, but become a full-time member of the faculty.

Mr. Kellison

I am originally from Parkersburg, West Virginia and graduated from Parkersburg High School in 2010. No other career choice seemed to interest me except teaching. I received my undergraduate in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Social Studies from Marshall University. In August of 2017, I graduated from Marshall University again with his MA in Secondary Education. While working on my MA, I subbed in Cabell County in various positions. This year I will be teaching AP Government, Ancient History, Computer Science, and Sociology
